Around a hundred thousand people are expected descend on Torremolinos this Sunday (23 September) to enjoy the colourful Romería de San Miguel.
In what is one of the biggest urban pilgrimages in Spain, more than 60 decorated gypsy-style caravans and floats, many pulled by oxen and horses, will trundle through the town, followed by excited revellers who dance and sing their way along the streets.
The romería began in the 1940s and has continued uninterrupted along the same route ever since; however, this year, the itinerary has been changed due to the renovation work currently in progress in the centre of the town.
As usual, the event will start at 10am in the Avenida Los Manantiales, but it will then move to the church of the Buen Consejo in Plaza Picasso, instead of heading to the Plaza Costa del Sol and the Avenida de Mallorca. Following a short blessing outside the church, the procession will then pass along Avenida Isabel Manoja, Calle Joan Miró and Avenida Rafael Quintana Rosado, before continuing through El Calvario and onto the pine forest next to the fairground.
This popular and festive pilgrimage precedes the town's annual fair, which begins on Wednesday 26 and continues until Sunday 30 September.
