Unions have criticised Ryanair for bringing in staff from other areas to beat the strike action by Spanish-based cabin crews and pilots. Action on 1 and 2 September saw just 15 cancellations in Spain across the flight programme.

The firm was said to have used crews from the UK, Ireland and Belgium. But a crew from Portugal reportedly refused to cover for their striking Spanish colleagues.

Spanish-based crews are striking over the airline's plans to shut bases on the Canaries and in Girona, although routes there wouldn't be axed.

The government has also insisted on minimum services on strike days, for example 35 per cent of international flights under five hours staffed by Spanish-based crews must run.

Planned strike days remaining are; 6,8,13,15, 19, 20, 22 and 27 September. Ryanair flights operated by non-Spanish-based crews are not affected.
