Work to double the capacity of the desalination plant in Marbella will end in the first half of 2024. Then it will be able to provide a better service during the summer seasons with a maximum influx of tourists.
The date was confirmed by the regional minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Carmen Crespo, during a visit to the plant, managed by public water company Acosol.
The expansion, included in the third drought decree of the Andalusian regional government, will increase the amount treated to 12 cubic hectometres compared to the current six.
"It is a fundamental action for the interests of the Costa del Sol, which has 527,000 registered inhabitants. But we all know that the reality is that this figure is much higher and close to 1.5 million people," said Crespo, who pointed out that the Junta de Andalucía has allocated 3.3 million euros to the project.
There is also a 20-million-euro project to modernise the Río Verde drinking water treatment station (ETAP).
