Torremolinos town hall has announced that almost 900 foreign athletes of eight nationalities will make use of the town’s sports facilities for training sessions in different sports throughout March. These will include 27 football teams, six swimming, four athletics and two multi-sport teams.
A total of 650 footballers from the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden and Italy will train on the natural grass and artificial turf pitches at the Ciudad de Torremolinos sports stadium.
More than 130 swimmers from Norway, Canada, Hungary, Germany and Sweden will use the recently renovated Virgen del Carmen III Olympic pool; while 80 athletes from four athletics teams from Sweden and Norway will use the facilities of the Ciudad de Torremolinos sports stadium for preparatory sessions. Finally, two multi-sport groups consisting of 30 athletes from Sweden will make use of tennis courts and outdoor tracks.
The town hall claimed that the weather, the large choice of hotels, the varied sports facilities and the proximity of Torremolinos to Malaga Airport is what makes the town attractive to foreign sports clubs. The presence of these athletes has a direct impact on the economy of the town: last year, 2,172 athletes from 15 countries passed through Torremolinos, which the council said had an economic impact of over one million euros.
