New British supermarket set to open in Mijas by the end of March

The same team behind Iceland stores on the Costa is also behind The Food Co, which will offer Tesco's range at a shop on the Fuengirola to Mijas road in Las Lagunas

A rapidly growing Spanish-based chain of supermarkets selling Tesco products has announced that its new Mijas store will open "by the end of March".

The Food Co is currently fitting out a 600-square-metre unit on the road between Fuengirola and Mijas, in Las Lagunas. It is between rival supermarket Aldi and the car dealers Carsol.

The company has an exclusive licence to sell goods from Tesco, the leading British supermarket group. It will offer 7,500 product lines of Tesco-branded goods as well as household brand names. Managers at The Food Co commented that they are always looking to offer "the best of British".

The Food Co is part of Overseas Imports, which is also linked to Overseas Supermarkets, the firm already running the well-established Iceland stores on the Costa.

Like at Iceland, all staff at The Food Co's store selling Tesco brands will speak English and all labels will be in English. The firm is hiring both full-time and part-time English-speaking staff.

Overseas success story

The mastermind behind the project is the Alicante-based food importer Overseas Imports, specialising in British supermarket products.

The businessman and director of Overseas Imports, Bryn Robertson, brokered the agreement to distribute products from Tesco in Spain. Tesco currently operates 2,500 supermarkets in 12 countries.

Robertson is also chairman of Overseas Supermarkets that is in partnership with Tesco's rival Iceland in Spain. An Iceland supermarket can be found in the nearby Miramar shopping park in Las Lagunas.

The launch in Mijas marks The Food Co's first venture in Malaga province. It will be the chain's second Spanish store, joining The Food Co's supermarket in Mazarrón (Murcia) that opened in November.

Following the opening of this new store in Mijas, the company plans on expanding further into Spain, Portugal and Gibraltar, until the first quarter of 2021.

Managers are already on the hunt for the best new locations. They commented, "If you have a property you can send a recommendation to our expansion team."
