This year's Oscar success for Guillermo del Toro came after previous years of disappointment. One of his most famous films, Pan's Labyrinth, set in Spain during the Civil War, had received nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Foreign Language Film, but hadn't won either category. Eleven years later, Del Toro has finally found success with the The Shape of Water, which won Best Picture this year, as well as allowing him to achieve Best Director for his role in the masterpiece.
Now the Mexican-born director can look forward to another award, having been named as the recipient of the Malaga-SUR prize at the Malaga Spanish Film Festival next month. The ceremony will take place on 14 April at the Teatro Cervantes.
The director of Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth will become the first Oscar-winner to also receive the highest award at the Malaga festival (named for its partnershp with SUR) for his professional career.
He will also be the first director to win the award, which is normally given to actors.
