Work on a new AVE station near central Antequera to start soon

The stop will serve the soon-to-open Granada-Antequera high-speed line, which will connect with the existing Malaga-Madrid AVE route

The government has announced contracts worth over 16 million euros for a new train station near the centre of Antequera. The station will serve a high- speed AVE train line connecting Granada with the existing Malaga-Madrid line that will start operating later this year.

This long-awaited connection, which will reduce travel time from Granada to both the capital and to Malaga city, passes through the inland town. A previous constructor got into financial trouble and the contract was cancelled.

The new station, which will have underground platforms, will combine the existing, slower speed line in Antequera and some 300 metres of that line will need to be realigned.

Until the station is completed, the new Granada high-speed service will stop at the existing Antequera-Santa Ana station, on the Malaga AVE line, some 18 kilometres from the town centre. Once the station is finished, Antequera will be the only place outside Madrid with two high-speed rail stops.
